Getting a Good Deal on Perfume

If you never want to pay full price for anything you buy, perfumes may be a sticky category because name brands hardly ever go on sale. Nevertheless, here are a few ways to still get a better deal when you’re buying a perfume for any one on your list.

Special Offers

Many upscale department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and the like run frequent promotions on perfumes where they don’t knock off any thing from the price tag, but give you incentives like free make up, cosmetic bags, traveling bags and more. There are more promotions running around the holidays, but during other times of the year as well, you can get a neat tote bag for yourself when you buy a perfume. Some have the Nautica or Polo Ralph Lauren monogram on it which isn’t s bad thing if you’re going to use it yourself.

Gift Sets

If an average bottle of perfume costs $58, you may be able to get a gift set of that fragrance for $65 which would include an extra bottle of scented lotion and perhaps a deodorant or soap bar. This way not only does it make the packaging prettier, you get one or two more things for just a little more.

Auction Sites

There may be a perfume you’re looking for which doesn’t really appeal to someone else across the country. He could list a brand new, sealed in box perfume on eBay and you can buy it off him at a reduced price. Always compare prices with other e-retailers so that you can compare shipping and handling costs too.

If the perfume is for yourself, you may want to save even more by buying an opened bottle. Someone may have not liked the fragrance after trying it on and you can cash in on his loss. Some people even sell testers which mean that the bottle may be slightly used. Always ask for pictures to see exactly ho much fragrance is left in the bottle.

Drug Stores

While drug stores like Walgreens or CVS may not carry the latest and greatest brands of perfume, they do carry classics lie Cool Water and Chanel No.5 and offer them at lower prices than would department stores. If you are going for a classic for yourself or someone else, there is no harm in checking the perfume section when you go to grab some milk.

How the Perfume Bottle Does Make a Difference

You may think it’s what is inside the bottle of perfume that really matters, but for a gift as sensual and as romantic as perfume, the bottle does say a lot. Many fragrances are very similar if you were to test them blindly. A little more citrus in one and a little more sandalwood in the other is unnoticeable by the untrained nose. However, what makes one bottle of perfume stand out from amongst the rest is the way it is designed and decorated on a dressing table or kept on the counter between a double marble bowl vanity.

Some classic perfumes have very classic bottles which have become a trademark of the fragrance. Just pouring the most expensive perfume in to an ordinary bottle will never sell. The converse may not be true always. An average perfume may sell if the bottle is something to talk about. Of course there may not be repeat purchases f the perfume doesn’t deliver on its promise and it may not go down as a classic but at least it will entice the first time buyer. A very plain or unappealing perfume bottle will not even be given that chance.

Although exact amounts vary from designer to designer, but a large chunk of the budget of launching a perfume goes into bottle deign, colors, type face and of course the name of the perfume. A trend that began with the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Coco Chanel has caught on so much that teeny bopper stars also have their own brand of perfume today.

Some Classic Bottles

The Jean Paul Gaultier bottles of perfume both for men and women are always one of the first that come to mind. The silhouette of a man and woman in deep aqua-blue and pale dusty pink respectively was something very different from the square and cylindrical bottles common to many perfumes. Further the tin type packaging that houses that attractive perfume bottle just makes it even better.

The classic, clean lines of the Chanel no. 5 bottle with the legendary Chanel logo in black has always been a permanent feature on many dressers. It is nothing fancy but it symbolizes timelessness.

Although not very upscale, the Hot and Cold perfume from the United Colors of Benetton also have a very cute bottle with faucets as the top of the fragrance. It was very apt to go with an easily identifiable object that plays the name of the perfume very well and appeals to the younger crowd.
